This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
In an age where big-box retailers and one-stop shopping are all the rage, it's refreshing to see locally-owned shops not only surviving but thriving. I have always been a champion for the 'little guy' so I was pleased to make the acquaintance of Sterling Bingham and hear about his company, Sterling Quality Tire Factory in Clinton.
In 2002, Sterling and his wife, Lisa, wanted to open a local family-owned automotive business where the owner was present every day. They hoped to recreate the mechanic shops from yesteryear when owners were personally acquainted with their customers. The Binghams became part of a tire co-op called Tire Factory, which is a group of independent tire dealers who can buy as a group and get huge discounts. Sterling Quality Tire Factory officially opened in January 2002.
In the seven years since, the business has grown from three to 13 employees and is currently expanding to meet demand. Sterling says the company is a full-line tire store that stocks most major tire brands and several independent brands not sold at major tire stores. For example, Tire Factory is one of only three companies in the United States to stock Nokian Tires from Finland.
In addition to tires, the business also provides a range of automotive services such as alignments, tune-ups, transmissions and engine jobs and has a service department with several ASE master technicians. Sterling says his lead technician, Mike Christensen, specializes in computer reprogramming of cars to improve performance.
Sterling and Lisa have enjoyed creating a business that thrives on being a part of the local community. All employees live within a few miles of the shop, parts and supplies are purchased from local parts stores and Sterling Quality Tire Factory is heavily involved with supporting city sports and recreational leagues. The Binghams hope to continue taking care of people in their community and offering a high level of customer service.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
