Speaking on Business

MIKE'S GLASS WORKS

January 31, 2008

This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

During a recession back in the late 70s, Mike Van decided to take the plunge and start his own business, despite a less than ideal economic climate.

Mike's venture has worked out better than he ever could have imagined, and this month the company, Mike's Glass Works, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Jake Van, who runs the company with his wife, Chrissy, says Mike's Glass Works offers various types of glass including residential window glass, mirrors and shower doors. One of their specialties is the frame-less "Euro-style" heavy glass shower doors, or framed shower doors, with custom mirrors. They will also custom order any glass a client might be searching for that the business doesn't stock.

Good employees have made it possible for the store to stock a higher quantity of products, which means faster and more convenient service. Mike's Glass Works is set up to fabricate shower doors right in its West Jordan shop. The company also recently approached all the Lowe's stores from Payson to Logan to install shower doors and mirrors.

As a family-owned and operated company, Jake strongly believes in taking care of the small details sometimes overlooked by bigger companies. His business has become adept at overseeing such details. The company prides itself on having an excellent follow through with clients. Jake prefers to meet with clients in person, as opposed to taking care of business electronically or over the phone, to develop stronger client relations.

Jake tells me Mike's Glass Works has experienced continual growth over its 30-year history. Eventually Jake hopes to stock all products the business installs, but currently there are a few items they have to order. This month the company launched a complete redesign of its Web site, mikesglassonline.com.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
