This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Several years ago I told you about the amphibian art of Tim Cotterill, also known as the Frogman. Tim's bronze frog sculptures have become something of a sensation, sold at art galleries all over the world.
Now one of the Frogman's long-time supporters has begun a venture to translate his three-dimensional work into two-dimensional wearable art. For five years, Lindsay Hernandez ran the company responsible for marketing and distributing the Frogman's art. She resigned that post this year to form The Frogman Clothing Company, an upscale men's resort wear clothing company based in Park City.
Lindsay has worked with textile designers to create finely crafted shirts with frog-intensive designs. This fall, the company is unveiling six men's shirt designs — four silk and two cotton button-down, Hawaiian-style shirts. Each shirt is an adaptation of one of Tim Cotterill's frogs with the frog's name embroidered inside. Lindsay tells me two of the shirts have embroidered patterns so intricate that they had to be manufactured in China, where the complex technique is available.
The Frogman Clothing Company sells its men's shirts, t-shirts and caps on its Web site, frogmanclothing.com, and is currently working on a line of high-end t-shirts and caps. Lindsay says Hawaiian-style shirts like the ones Frogman sells are gaining popularity and acceptance, particularly in the business world, and she plans to offer them through upscale boutiques and high-end stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. Next year, she hopes to expand the company's clothing lines to reach women and children.
Frogman Clothing aims for the same standard of excellence as the sculptures, and will exhibit its shirts at gallery events in connection with Tim's art. Lindsay tells me that licensee Cindi Keller is creating another form of wearable art based on Frogman's designs — Frogman Jewelry Company — which will also be sold through frogmanclothing.com. Who would have guessed that a little frog could inspire three promising business ventures?
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
