This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

In January 2011, Westminster College, Utah’s only private liberal arts college, will be celebrating 100 years of being in the heart of Sugarhouse. This amazing college started 135 years ago in the basement of a Presbyterian Church.

With location being a key draw for students, the synergy between the Sugarhouse community and the students and employees on campus is being demonstrated in powerful ways, like business discount cards for their 3,200 students. These students discovered that almost everything they need is within the business community just a few blocks from the college.

With over 40 percent of Westminster’s freshman class from out of state, the powder skiing of our fabulous Utah ski resorts is a huge draw. Students from all over the country have come to the campus for the phenomenal academic programs and close proximity to Utah’s world-class ski resorts.

The college is gaining a strong reputation for their Winter at Westminster program. This allows students nationwide to enroll as full-time visiting students and participate in a variety of winter activities like kite skiing and yurt camping. Additionally, Westminster has over 50 U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team athletes attending the college through a grant tuition program, 14 of whom competed in the 2010 Olympic Games.

You can’t help but notice the affection and love the alumni community has for Westminster. When I asked what the magic about this campus is I learned, “The students come first,” so decisions are made every day about how to better serve and educate them.

One impressive part of this approach is that every student has to accomplish the college-wide learning goals. These are skills that must be mastered before students graduate. Research has shown this is what global companies are looking for and include: critical, analytical and integrative thinking; creative and reflective capacities; leadership, collaboration and teamwork; writing and other communication skills; and global consciousness, social responsibility and ethical awareness.

From aviation to environmental studies, Westminster offers 38 undergraduate degree programs and 14 graduate programs.

For Zions Bank, I’m Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
