According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 34 percent of adults age 20 years and older are obese, and another 34 percent are overweight but not obese. This dangerous epidemic presents a wide variety of health concerns. One of the best tools to fight it is regular exercise. The CDC also reports that more men than women get the appropriate amount of exercise.
In 1992, committed fitness and advertising veterans Gary and Diana Heavin decided they wanted to provide a place outside traditional fitness centers where women could feel comfortable exercising and strength training. They created Curves fitness centers, the largest fitness chain in the world. Curves centers are now found all over the United States and in 70 countries.
Claudette Connell was already a faithful Curves member when the gym she attends in West Valley City went up for sale. She immediately decided owning the gym was the next step she needed to make in her life so she purchased it just over a year ago. She attended the week-long Curves International training camp for new gym owners and received instruction to be a successful franchise owner.
The year since she purchased the gym has been quite a learning experience, Claudette says, but she loves it. Her employees, who have been working at the gym for years, have helped smooth the transition. Claudette says her clients love the facility’s combination of strength training and cardiovascular activities . During the summer months she has been offering a mothers and daughters promotion for girls ages 13 to 18 to join the Curves facility with their mother.
One of the unique things about Claudette’s West Valley City location is that it offers a stretching circuit that women can follow after their workout. Her assistant manager recently completed the Understanding Nutrition course from Curves University and now teaches free weight management classes.
