Beginning in his teenage years, Jim Cross became a river guide expedition leader. He led expeditions for NASA and the Smithsonian to remote areas of the world to study geology, animal and plant life. He even led expeditions on rivers that had never been run before. All of these experiences gave him a sound understanding of water and how a river works.
Later, when Jim was fulfilling military service in Vietnam, he worked with aircrafts and also became knowledgeable about aircraft technology. After completing his military service, Jim worked for the Orem Fire Department. During those years, the firemen were frequently called on to conduct searches for accident victims in lakes and rivers. Jim began looking at better ways of conducting these searches and developed sonar equipment, including a GPS device, before the technology was widely available to the public. All of these factors combined to help Jim form Cross Marine in American Fork.
Cross Marine specializes in water-related construction, commercial diving, dredging, and search and recovery. The company can provide complete marine support for the construction, drilling, petroleum, hydro electrical and defense industries. It also offers barge and transportation services, pipe installation, dam and lock inspection and repair, marine salvage, hazardous waste control, containment and removal and mapping and underwater surveys.
Jim says Cross Marine is known for its unique approach to solving water-related problems. The company designs and engineers equipment that can quickly be built into the technology required to address pressing problems. For example, Cross Marine provided equipment for British Petroleum and Chevron Oil to help with the recent oil spills. It was also the only company able to provide salvage services when a bridge below Hoover Dam collapsed a few years ago. Cross Marine, which now has a global presence, is known for its adaptability, flexibility and ability to multi-task in difficult situations.
