What happens when you get 103 infants, toddlers and young children under one roof? At SmartKids in Taylorsville, it makes for a lot of excitement and means that no two days are ever the same. Some days bring field trips to places such as museums or parks while others bring educational opportunities such as Spanish lessons — and every day brings fun.
Owner Katia Lopez says early childhood care has always intrigued her. Before coming to the United States from Peru, she studied early childhood development at the university for six years. She was doing her best to come up with a plan for how to incorporate it into her life. She worked in a Peruvian daycare for four years until she moved to the United States in 2001. Still learning English, she began working for different Hispanic companies until she eventually came to work for a daycare center.
In 2004, Katia opened her own daycare center in the basement of her home. She and her mother were the sole employees for the first two years until they had 15 kids and decided to open a second home-based daycare. By 2008, they were caring for 65 children and moved the business from the house to a more accommodating building. They called it SmartKids.
Today, SmartKids specializes in early childhood care but offers programs for kids up to age 12. The company is involved with several educational programs designed for infants and toddlers because Katia and her staff are strong believers in education during the first year of a child’s life. SmartKids also offers transportation to and from school and has kindergarten and preschool on site. Katia enjoys taking her young charges to movies, museums, parks, aquariums, or bowling alleys. She recently relocated the business to an even-larger facility in Taylorsville to accommodate demand.
SmartKids is also one of the only daycares to offer Spanish-as-a–second-language classes. Katia and her staff provide only the highest degree of care to the young clientele.
