With the growth of computer and console games, natural or outdoor play has almost become a thing of the past. Children are much more likely to be found inside than outdoors. But Brian Stromberg and Greg Pickett hope to encourage free play with the equipment offered by their company, Playscape H20.

Ogden-based Playscape H2O is the creator and distributor of the El-Kap Bouldering Wall and the Canyonz Bouldering Slide. The El-Kap is an 8-ft. climbing wall with professional handholds that allows children to get a taste of climbing without presenting safety hazards. Playgrounds all over the United States have purchased the popular product for the past seven years. However, Greg and Brian realized the need for modifications to make it even more interesting to children, which led to the creation of their second product.

The Canyonz Bouldering Slide is an 8-ft. climbing wall with a 14-ft. tunnel slide. One end has a natural ladder that leads up to the slide. Brian says adding the slide makes the product even more useful because of the added variety of play values, so children spend hours playing on it. He says it's much more than a climbing wall — it's an adventure. Locally, Ogden city and West Haven have each recently purchased two of the Canyonz Bouldering Slides, and Brian says the children couldn't get enough of them.

Both Brian and Greg feel passionate about their company's work. As fathers of a cumulative seven children, they've had experience with playgrounds. The idea for Playscape H20 came a few years ago when they were hiking at Zions National Park. They felt a need for a different type of outdoor equipment and set out to create it.

Playscape H2O products are all manufactured right in Ogden. Brian tells me he and Greg recently hired Ed Dilbeck as the company president to manage day-to-day operations. This enables Brian and Greg to concentrate on product sales with a network of distributors throughout the United States.
