Karla Jay has been helping children with educational disorders like dyslexia for many years. She spent several years as a private practioner and studied the similarities between dyslexia, brain tumors and strokes.

In 2000, the University of Utah hired Karla to help with a new study. A team of radiologists and neuroscientists were using advanced brain imaging tools to study, among other things, the causes of learning disorders. The results of those studies led Karla to formulate a treatment program that defines and corrects the major blockages to learning. After the study was discontinued in 2001, Karla launched her new treatment program as U CAN LEARN Centers, a non-profit agency located in Murray.

U CAN LEARN started out as a learning center where any child with a learning disorder could go for educational assistance. After several parents approached Karla to request that she expand her program into a school, she started her private school in 2006. Today, U CAN LEARN Centers is an accredited school that teaches the regular state core curriculum and provides therapy for information processing problems.

Karla says her goal is to help each of her students develop a love for books and the printed word. Some students enter the school thinking they can't read and don't want to learn, but she is committed to helping them. She offers a one-on-one after-school intervention and tutoring program that focuses heavily on math, reading and writing as well as the underlying processing hindrance to learning. Karla is currently constructing a brand new building in Sandy that combines the school and learning center into one facility.

As a non-profit agency, Karla says she can reach a greater number of struggling students. U CAN LEARN Centers is one of the only facilities that looks at overall processing systems that consider why a student has a learning disorder and takes steps to correct it. The research-based treatment program is proven to have long-term effects.
