This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
In bygone days people worked at the same job for their entire lives, but today most Americans will make several major career changes over the course of their working lives. Frank Volkert is no exception to this trend.
Frank spent most of his life in the flooring business, laying carpet, vinyl and other types of flooring. However, he was concerned about not being able to keep up with the physical rigors of his job as he came closer to retirement age. He started searching for business opportunities and discovered a company called DVD Now, a DVD movie rental kiosk distributor.
After talking with the owner of the company, Frank flew to Vancouver, British Columbia to meet the owner in person. He purchased five machines and placed them in various locations throughout Northern Utah, including his hometown of Morgan, and Volkert DVDs was born.
Volkert DVDs distributes DVDs for rental at its kiosk locations. Frank originally stocked the machines with a mix of new releases and older movies, but older releases didn't rent well, so he shifted the focus to only the newest releases. Frank tells me one nice thing about his kiosks is that they cater to smaller stores and companies that his larger competitors wouldn't service.
Frank has placed machines in Morgan, Huntsville, West Weber and Evanston, Wyo. His next target area is the downtown Ogden area. He feels the machines could benefit many residents who don't have cars to drive several miles to rent a video.
Frank says Volkert DVDs is unique in that it is a local business that can serve companies large and small. Within the next 10 years Frank hopes to see the business become a well-established brand with an assortment of machines in key locations.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
