CASPER'S MALT SHOPPE

April 18, 2008

This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Back in 1925, with ice from the Cub River and milk from the family farm, Casper Merrill created his own recipe for delicious hard ice cream. He opened a plant in Richmond and began manufacturing the original Fat Boy ice cream products.

When she was 16, Tiffany Vega started working for Casper's Ice Cream, and by the time she was 18, she ran a manufacturing line. That job supported her through college, but once she graduated from Utah State University, she wanted to do something more. She decided to purchase a franchise and open an ice cream parlor. In 2006 she saw her dream come to pass when Casper's Malt Shoppe opened for business.

Entering Casper's Malt Shoppe in Providence is like taking a step back in time. The shop is decorated to look like a turn-of-the-century ice cream parlor, and the ambience is delightful! Everything from crown moldings to period light fixtures to a big soda bar adds to the atmosphere. All desserts are served in glassware as they would have been during that time period.

In addition to single scoops of ice cream, the business offers old-fashioned shakes made from hard ice cream, which Tiffany says, means their quality is supreme. They also sell sundaes, banana splits and something called a brownie delight, which is a top seller. The delectable dessert comes with two big warm brownies, two scoops of ice cream and is served with fudge and whipped cream.

Tiffany tells me her shop is designed to be the flagship location for Casper's Ice Cream. Casper's sayings are hung throughout the shop and his original ice cream recipe of butter, sugar and milk has changed very little over the past 80 years. Just as it did when it was founded, Casper's Malt Shoppe caters fairs, weddings and community events.

Tiffany hopes more Cache Valley residents can slow down and take a step back in time while enjoying the delicious ice cream offered at Casper's Malt Shoppe.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
