THE DIVERSITY TIMES

April 9, 2008

This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Albert C. Jones sees the Wasatch Front as an increasingly multicultural society, abandoning the all-white image many associate with Utah.

After moving to the state several years ago, Albert felt the push to create something to address the needs of the growing ethnic populations in the state, especially because he is one himself. As an 18-year veteran newspaper reporter, Albert decided the best way to accomplish his goal was to create a newspaper geared specifically for Utah's multicultural community. The result was The Diversity Times, launched in June 2006.

The Diversity Times is a free monthly publication designed to specifically cover events, activities and issues affecting Utah's multicultural community. The publication covers everything from events at the different ethnic chambers of commerce to scholarships available for minorities. The paper also highlights ethnic organizations, churches, nonprofits and schools and is designed as a method of outreach for refugees.

The Diversity Times has been heavily involved with the community and covers a wide range of stories affecting ethnic populations as a whole that larger papers don't always cover. Stories often hold international importance and involve everything from education to immigration or even supporting small business start-ups.

Alisa Garcia, publicity manager for the Diversity Times, says the front page story is usually a big draw for readers, but highlights from different organizations are also quite popular. Several major corporations, including Wal-Mart and other various advertisers, are sponsoring the paper, but Albert hopes to increase sponsorship of the publication. He would also like to grow circulation from 10,000.

As Utah's ethnic and minority populations continue to increase, Albert hopes The Diversity Times can help address their needs and concerns.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
