COMMON GROUND

March 28, 2008

This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Would you like to be involved with an organization that provides outdoor activities to those who would generally never have the opportunity? If so, Sammie Macfarlane and Stephen Anderson have developed a great opportunity.

Common Ground Outdoor Adventures, located in Logan, has a mission to increase opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities to actively participate in adaptive recreation and outdoor adventures. Sammie and Stephen provide a variety of recreational opportunities in Northern Utah. Sammie explained Common Ground will facilitate individuals, families and friends to explore the full potential within and discover hidden abilities, no matter the physical or developmental hurdles.

Last year the organization provided more than 250 activities and trips for more than 1,500 people with disabilities. Common Ground also lends its equipment and support to the Special Olympics.

Participants not only have the opportunity for adventure and outdoor activity, but they also receive knowledge and education about ecology, geology and the cultural history of the places they visit. They are introduced to the recreational leisure lifestyle and are provided with the opportunity to become more independent.

Active recreation is an important component of rehabilitation, and it enhances the well being of all people. Common Ground participants gain a sense of rejuvenation, exhilaration and self-confidence from spending time in scenic natural environments. Common Ground Outdoor Adventures recognizes that many times those with disabilities come from low-income households. Lack of financial resources precludes many from participating in recreational activities. Sammie, Stephen and the other staff members rely on volunteers and contributions to carry out their most worthwhile goals.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
